Fuji-san!
Posted by Marc under Travel Tales
I DID IT!! It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and altitude sickness almost got me, but I persevered and made it to the top. Mt. Fuji is a difficult hike, and it gets cold at night. The worst part for me was the lack of oxygen near the top. I had to go really slowly, which was easy to do, since there were about a zillion other people on the mountain. We started about 9:30pm or so on Sunday night, and hiked all night. We reached the summit about 4:30, just as the sun was starting to rise. The pictures here don’t really do it justice, but it was breathtaking. The other people on the trip were friends and/or ex-AEON coworkers of Ben’s, or Ben’s former students. Good people all around, and a fun, but exhausting day. Pix:

Wow, that’s amazing! Congratulations!
I hope you got someone to drive you on the way back down, though. Y’all look pooped. (I have to ask, though, what the hell are you walking through in picture #3? It looks like you’ve suddenly come across a playroom ball pit.)

when you said you were going to climb mt. fuji It didn’t really occr to me that you were going to climb “MT. FUJI.” Holy cow!!! You climbed Mt. Fuji!! That’s so amazing!!! Did you have a chance to use any of your rock climbing skills? (btw, you and Ben need to move back soon. I haven’t done any rock climbing since y’all left.)

I have to say as a non-active type person I am super impressed! I breathe a little heavy after walking up the stairs to get on the subway. Shannon and I shared this news with Mike this weekend up in VT. We ran into him randomly on the street and went out for drinks. Good to see all is well and can’t wait for the next update.
